The second activity for today is to pick on VC winner and read about him. Am I going to fast? Let me explain. Soldiers that fought in HUGE wars, would earn a Victoria Cross (or VC for short) for their bravery. We have to pick one soldier from World War 2 who achieved one, and write about him. How did he get it? When did he get it? I chose John Hinton.
Activity 2-
John Hinton earned his VC while serving with 20th Battalion in Greece. In 1941, April, he was amongst a large force of New Zealand and British. They were attacked by Germany and a retreat was ordered. He ignored the order and went into the German base. He took out the enemy gun crews with hand grenades. Shortly afterwards, he was shot in the stomach and taken prisoner. He escaped twice and tried several other times. He was awarded the VC while lying in a hospital bed. He was recovering from a beating administered to him during one of his attempts.

Hi Lauren,
ReplyDeleteWow! John Hinton sounded like an amazing soldier and deserved the Victoria Cross for sure! I think every individual who served in WWII deserved one for serving our country in such a difficult time. My great grandfather served in the war, he was in charge of manning the heavy weapons and came back deaf because of how loud the guns were!
If you had to ask John Hinton a question what would you ask? I would probably want to know what was going on in his mind when he went into the German base!
Looking forward to hearing from you and keep up the blog posting!
