Summer Learning Journey:Day 2 Part 2

The second activity for today is to draw our dream job. This relates to the 1800s, where the Maori people would get married at a young age. The wives are to have babies and look after the home and children. The husbands were expected to leave home to work. There future was basically chosen for them. But we should be able to have a choice of what we want to do with our lives. That is why we have to draw our dream job.

Activity 2-
I don't have a solid idea of what I want to be when I am older yet. But I do have one idea. I love gymnastics, so I would like to do competition across the world. I started gymnastics at the start of the year. My top 2 favorite events are floor and bars. I'm better at floor though. I practise gymnastics everyday on my tramp (unless its raining). So my dream job is to be a professional (and good) gymnast.  'Gymnastics isn't a sport, it's my life'.

I decided to be creative and use photos that I've already done of gymnastics. So it's me doing the gymnastics.

My least favorite event is beam. The beam if 4 inches wide and 1.25 meters off the ground. I don't have a beam at home, so I put duct tape on my trampoline to practise safely. Beam is scary because the land is really small. One mess up and you fall on the beam and onto the ground. My balance is average for a gymnast, but I need better balance and confidence to jump and leap higher.

Beam-

I started working on bars in about term 3 or 4. I'm a self taught gymnast so I don't take lessons. There is a bar at our school playground. I learnt how to do a pullover after a LONG time practising (the bar was over my head). One afternoon at our 15 minute lunch break, I decided to practise some random back hip circles with my friend Alyscia (she also kinda does gymnastics). At the last few seconds, I got it really easy. Alyscia was REALLY close to doing it. After school, we went back on it and Alyscia got it first or second try. My reaction for her was "OH MY GOSH! CONGRATS!!!" and I have her a big hug. :)

Bars-

As I said before, floor is my best and favorite events. I have a trampoline at home and I use it everyday. I practise on my grass with thin foam mattresses to make it softer is I fail. I can now do a BHS (backhandspring) on the ground. Transferring some skills from the trampoline to the ground is really hard. So I practise on a thick mattress and work my way down to the ground (less pillows, thinner mattress etc).
Floor-

I don't really have a mind about vault. I don't hate it nor love it. I just like it better than beam because I strongly dislike beam. I barely practise on vault. If I do, I use a low stool as the vault. Depending on the skill, I may or may not have a mattress underneath my to catch me. I use youtube as a coach for gymnastics, because I don't have any real coaches that can help me.
Vault (I had to photoshop it because I never used a vault) -

Here is a video I made for the arts kete which includes ballet and gymnastics. No copyright intended.

  2. Hi there Lauren,

Wow! This is an amazing post and I'm very impressed with your gymnastic skills. I love the photos that you've put on here for each event and how you've explained each one in detail.
I, myself like watching the gymnastics during the big sporting events like the Olympics and the Commonwealth Games; my favourite event, by far has got to be floor, as it's where each athlete shows their individual style.
Are there any gymnasts that you aspire to be like?
Keep up all the practising Lauren, and one day you can achieve your dream job! Good luck!
Looking forward to hearing from you and keep up the awesome posts!

    Jade F :)
