Summer Learning Journey:Day 2, Part 2

Back in the 1920s, a new artistic movement emerged in New Zealand (and around the world). It was called 'Art Deco'. The painting below gives an example of what an Art Deco is (and the painting we are using for our activity)-

Our second task for day 2 (week 2) is to give a rating, out of five, of how much or not how much we like the style. 1 being - Call the fashion police! 2 being - Quite bad. 3 being - It's ok and all... 4 being - Cool. 5 being - Love it!

Activity 2-
In my thought, I would give it a 3. The skillness is good, but the meaning of the painting is all over the place. All I can work out is that it is woman in a greenish, blueish coloured car. That part makes sense. Then there is this weird coat monster next to her. That is what makes me confused. I have no idea what it is or what the purpose of it is. That is why I give it a lower score. I can tell straight away (just by looking at it) that is in the 19s or lowers times kind of painting. If you have a different arts taste than me, I guess I could see why you would like that style. But my art style is more pictures than paintings.

  1. Hi there Lauren,

Great job on another blog post. I thought your response on the Art Deco painting was very thought out. I could see through you mentioning what you saw in the painting like the colours and objects such as the car and the woman. I thought your comment on what you called “coat monster” was very creative; that showed me that you were really analysing the painting which is what any art critic would do and I agree that it does sort of look like there is a weird creature in the front seat! If you look at the definition of art deco here https://www.google.co.nz/search?q=define+art+deco&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&client=firefox-b-ab&gfe_rd=cr&dcr=0&ei=-4hRWtgc7dzzB_2Cikg I think this might help with figuring out what the purpose or theme to the art piece is! It is quite a particular artform and it isn’t for everyone. I personally love all art forms and love going to art galleries in my spare time. Do you have any favourite art pieces or artists that you like the most? I have many favourites such as Frida Kahlo, Gustav Klimt and Picasso. :)

Keep up the amazing blogging and looking forward to reading more of your posts!

    Cheers
    Jade F :)
