Summer Learning Journey:Day 3, Part 2

The second story for today is that, during the Great Depression period, people and families found it hard to find jobs. There was also a Huge Drought and families lost their crops, meaning that they couldn't make money. Our task is to imagine we were alive during the 1930s. Our goal is to find 3 ways to help fundraise money for the families to buy food and clothes. Be creative :)

Activity 2-
1) Farming.
Because families need all hands on deck to keep their crops alive, I could do some farming for money. I could do things like fetch what is left in the nearby lakes and bring it back. Or I could help harvest the food, before they dry up and die. If they have enough water left, help plant seeds and help nurture them. I hope I could earn about $5 or less per hour.

2) Garage Sale.
I could sell all my toys and the left over food, for money. Then we could hopefully have enough to buy more food. If I don't have toys, anything we haven't used in the last month or so. We need all the money we can get.

3) Shoe Cleaning.
Back in those days, I think you could get a decent amount of money for shoe cleaning. I would set up a stall in front of our house, and hopefully the people passing by would stop to get their shoes cleaned. I would do my best work and do it as fastest. In hope that they would spread the word to their friends. $1 would be good enough, the cheaper the price, the more customers you would (hopefully) get.

  1. Hi there Lauren,

I thought your ideas in this activity were very creative. I especially liked your idea of shoe shining! That was definitely a way people earned money back in those days. I also liked the idea of a garage sale. I've been to a few garage sales and they are such a handy way to earn money! Have you been to a garage sale before or have held a garage sale at your house before?

Looking forward to hearing from you Lauren, keep up the amazing blog posts!
