1. A Wharepuni is a place where in the early 1800s, the Maori people would sleep
2. The roof was made with timber, rushes, fren ect.
3. The roof hangs far over the entrance.
4. The doorway is very small
Activity 1-
This is a Wharepuni-
See, small door, roof made of dry vegetations.
This is a modern day house-
Two similarities -
The Walls are both made of wood. Wood is a traditional base of a house. The outside might be wooden planks or bricks (houses these days).
Modern Day House Wood-
Wharepuni House Wood -
A strong foundation, walls, roof ect. A strong foundation is the key to a good home. Houses these days are build on mainly concret. They have a inside foundation of wood and plaster walls. Wharepuni houses have strong wood covering the house right around. Then a strong layer of dozens and dozens (maybe even hundreds) of solid material covering the roof. Both are built to survive stormy and rainy weather and also the strong winds.
Modern House Roof and Walls -
Wharepuni House Roof and Walls -
Two Differences -
A house today, has insulation. Insulation is what keeps the house nice and warm. It can be located between your plaster walls (the walls inside your house) and your outside walls (bricks, wood etc). Insulation is like lots and lots of stuffing or pink (traditional colour) fluff put together. Like a blanket for your house. Wharepuni house (probably) wouldn't have any. Because there houses are small, there wouldn't be any space. Their houses would be cold and damp. hat might be the reason for the small door. To keep as much cold away and keep the heat inside.
Insulation-
A Wharepuni doesn't have windows (glass). They have the hole for it, but no glass. ALL houses these days have glass (or possibly even plastic?) windows. It's to provide light, scenery and to keep all the heat in/block all the wind out. Even tents and a form of window. The Wharepuni would be cold inside, with no protection to block the cold wind out. That might be why they only have one window.

Hi there Lauren
ReplyDeleteFantastic job on your blog post. I like how you have added in images to help support your explanation of both a modern house and a wharepuni. Well done!
Have you ever stayed in a traditional Maori house like a marae before? When I lived in Samoa, I stayed in a traditional Samoan house called a fale and it was very open but it had to be because of the warm climate; it was quite a fun experience.
look forward to hearing from you soon and keep up the great blogging.
