In the mid 1930s, things started to look better to New Zealand. They had better jobs and a good pay. But they were still careful with their money. They rarely, if ever, brought gifts for each other. Out bonus activity for today is to imagine we could travel back in time to the mid 1930s. What would be bring as gifts for them? Clothes? Money? Food?
Bonus Activity-
The first thing that came to my mind is a gadget. Back in those days, they probably wouldn't even know what a phone is. If I brought one and gave it to a few families, they would have fun for once. Hopefully not too much, otherwise they won't work and loose money etc. So probably just a Samsung J1. Something that they can use and have a little fun on.
I would also want to bring snacks. They would be skinny, having to work all day. I think if I give a packet of chips, it would motivate them. I'll tell them that they are made from potatoes. They'll work harder and harvest more potatoes.
Something they would love is the modern day clothes. It is a nice style and is colourful. I would like to have clothes from the future. You would stand out and get lots of attention.
The last thing I would bring if toys. Toys for the kids to play with. I would get the new ones. The type of toys I would bring is the electronic ones. The toys that walk and talk. The kids would be laughing and playing with is for ages. While their parents are working, they can entertain themself with the toys.

Hi Lauren,
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad that you've chosen to be involved in the Summer Learning Blogging program. Good on you! I'm reading your posts from Canada where we're experiencing deep cold.
My parents were raised in the 1930's as the were born in the early 1920's. Your suggestion of taking food, snacks, back in time is a good one as I know that my dad's best memories were of receiving tasty food. His diet was very bland because of the shortage of money with which his mother could buy the food they needed. They tried to grow and preserve as much as possible so that they didn't have to go to the grocery store other than for a few baking items like Baking soda and Baking Powder.
Certainly my parents would have been fascinated by mechanized, electronic toys! And my mother would have loved a chance to try new fashions.
I hope you'll continue to blog and that you're enjoying a lovely summer holiday! Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Hi there Lauren,
ReplyDeleteJade F here from the Summer Learning Journey! I’m impressed with the gift ideas that you have come up with. I thought your idea of cell phone would be quite handy for them, they might need something like that to be able to contact other family members and they could definitely have fun playing with different apps! Your idea of giving them chips for motivation was very creative, I would definitely be keen to grow my own vegetables and chips out of them! I thought your ideas of toys and clothing was a really good one, children need toys to play with and everyone needs clothes and I think since our modern day clothes would be different to theirs, I reckon the clothes you give them could be worn for special occasions!
Awesome job Lauren, looking forward to reading more of your posts!
Cheers
Jade F :)
