Summer Learning Journey:Day 3, Part 1

We are now up to day 3 of the Summer Learning Journey. In the 1800s, Maori families were pretty big. There would be an average of 7-9 children! That was because the couple got married at an earlier age. So they could have their first children at a younger age. The first activity today is to imagine you have a big family with lots of siblings. Would you or would you not want to be a member of a large family. We also have to write about what we would feel if we did.

Activity 1-

How I would feel-

Dear Diary.

Today is going to be a busy day. My younger twin brothers are having their birthday. They turn 6 today. My mum is busy looking after all of us and organising their birthday party. My older sister, Karen, and my older brother, Timmy, are out with their friends today. So that leaves 4 of us. My younger sister, Kelly, my younger twin brothers, Bill and Tom, and me. Kelly is 8 and I'm 12. Bill and Tom have the same friends, and different friends from each other. So that means we will be inviting 7 extra kids today. Unfortunately, they are all boys. 3 brothers are too much. Yet along having 9 boys in our house today. Ugh. Sometimes I wish I could only have sisters, or maybe be an only child. But as far as I know they are no only childs around. The first guest is coming. Write To You Later.

Dear Diary.

The party is over and we are now getting ready for bed. I'm SO mad with Kelly that I could just run away from home. How dare she think that it is ok to sneak out of the house and come back a few minutes later with a spiders egg. She took it on a stick and placed it under my bed as a 'funny little prank'. Then as I went to my bed, I saw a few spiders around the house. Spiders are normal around here. But then I saw that they were all coming from under my pillow! I also noticed a puffy white cobweb beside the spiders. Kelly was right behind me, snickering as I turned to look at her. I shouted her name at the top of my lungs. Kelly took off running. Instead of running after her, I reported what she did to my mum. My mum is going to find a suitable consequence with her tomorrow. But right now, I have to sleep OUTSIDE tonight!!! Kelly is going to wish she didn't do that silly prank of hers...

Do I want a large family or not-
In my opinion, I wouldn't want to have a big family. I already have an older brother, and we can fight sometimes. But most of the time we get along. One older brother can be enough sometimes...

  1. Hi Lauren,

Ruby here from the Summer Learning Journey team :)

What a great job you have done with this post! I really like how you have written it out as a diary explaining some of the ups and downs of having a large family.

I agree with you that one big brother can be enough! I have 3 siblings (2 brothers and 1 sister) and the brothers can be particularly annoying!

What do you think the hardest thing would be about having a large family? I think it would be difficult if you were the oldest because you would have to help your parents a lot.

    Cheers,
    Ruby.
