Summer Learning Journey:Day 4, Part 2

The second activity for day 4 is to choose a maori styled game and explain on our blog how to play it and 2 rules. The options were Poi Rakau, Ki o Rahi, Koruru and Poi Toa Roupo. I decided to choose Poi Rakau.

Activity 2-
This is the way we got taught it-

The name of the game is Poi Rakau. Poi Rakau is a game that involves rhyme, timing and coordination. You pair up up with a partner. Each of you have 2 wooden sticks. They should all be the same length and width. You pass it to each other in rhyme to a waiata. You tap them together and bang them against the ground in time with the song. You flip it and pass it to each other's hand. Then you continue until the song finished. You need good coordination and timing to perform it right. it takes a lot of practise too. Performing in a group can sound really nice.

Two rules of the game:
1. You need to pass the Rakau (the stick) lightly to the other person so they won't drop is and go out of time.
2.  You need to focus at all times on the rhyme and the timing, not looking around the room. Keep your head in the game.

In my opinion, Poi Rakau is a good practise for learning to control your body and to learn to multitask.

  1. Hi Lauren,

Ruby here from the Summer Learning Journey!

Good work with this activity! But I think you have gotten the name of the game mixed up! The game you have described is Ti Rakau. You've done a great job and I would know exactly what to do if I were playing this.

Have a look at the link for Poi Rakau and see if you think that looks like fun! I have played it a few times before and always have a lot of fun. Hand-eye coordination is very important in Poi Raku.

I look forward to reading more of your blog over the summer.
    Cheers,
    Ruby.
