Summer Learning Journey:Day 1, Part 1

First I would like to start by saying, Merry Christmas Everyone! Today is christmas. But that doesn't mean the Summer Learning Journey stops. We are now one week 2. The first activity talks about the building going on. The early British settlers wanted to build placed to meet together, such as a church. One of the largest building to be constructed during this period was St Joseph Cathedral which is located in Dunedin. The first task for today is to search up another famous Cathedral. Post a picture of it, where it is located, the name, how long it took to build etc.

Activity 1-
I choose the Christchurch Cathedral. Even though it is long gone, it still was a cathedral. It got destroyed in the 2011 Christchurch earthquake. It was a well known Christchurch landmark, even up to this day.

Here is what the picture of what it looked like, before the disaster-

Name - Christchurch Cathedral
Where it was located - Christchurch Central City, New Zealand
When it was being built - 1864
How long it took - round about 40 years (1864-1904)

Because people could no longer worship there, people build a temporary one, made entirely out of cardboard!

In September this year (2017), they have agreed to rebuild the cathedral, or another landmark. To replace the old one. A lot of the city was destroyed during the earthquakes. Workplaces, houses, road/streets etc. But there is also good new. The city has changed a lot and is looking a whole lot more modern. We even have the largest playground in the southern hemisphere. The Margaret Mahy Playground, named after a good kiwi write who has passed away.

  1. Hi there Lauren,

Jade F from the Summer Learning Journey here!

Awesome that you've chosen a cathedral, that even though it was destroyed and no longer exists down in Christchurch, it's still considered a national landmark in New Zealand. And I love that you have also included some new structures that have been built in Christchurch as well as the new Cardboard Cathedral. Fantastic! Have you been to the new Cathedral and the Marget Mahey playground? They both look so cool! I've never been to those places in Christchurch but I would love to go see both of those place if I ever go to Christchurch to visit my family there.

Awesome post Lauren, I look forward to reading more of your posts.

    Jade F :)
