Summer Learning Journey:Day 5, Part 1

In 1990, one of the largest national parks in New Zealand, Tongariro, was listed as a World Heritage Site. It is a truly spectacular place to visit! Thousands of people go to Tongariro every year and hike the Tongariro Crossing. Our first task for today is to imagine that we were to go on that hike. We have to write down five things that we would bring with us.

Activity 1-
1) A Touch or some source of light. If things don't go to plan, and I get lost, I might be there up till night time. It would be hard to navigate your way around at night time with no light. Even if I decide to (a better option) stay still, so I won't get lost even more, I would need light to help build a shelter.

2) A Water Bottle. I would get exhausted if I were to do that long hike. It is always good to bring water incase you dehydrate during the walk. Especially if it is hot, your would need to keep cool otherwise you would get a heat stroke.

3) Suitable clothing. I would need to wear appropriate clothing on the hike. If it is really hot, t-shirt and shorts. If it was cold, warm jacket, long sleeves and track pants. Either way, I would need to bring sneakers.

4) A Friend. It is WAY safer to walk a hike with someone. Whether it a friend or family member. If anything goes wrong, at least I have someone there to help me.

5) A Phone. This may be the most important thing. A phone is easy to bring, just slip it in your pocket. You can easily make any necessary phone calls. You can text if you need help. If you are lost, you can use google or something??

  1. Hey Lauren,

This is Jade C from the Summer Learning Journey team 2018. I will be reading your activity blog post over the summer holidays :)

You have mentioned 5 essential things that you would definitely need when you go hiking. Things like water and light are top compulsory things that you will need.

First of all, I would also take a friend or someone that I can trust with me because I am a person who can't bare loneliness. I constantly need someone to talk to.

Secondly, I would take some food with me just incase I need energy. (Food that are light and easy to eat like muesli bars, energy balls, or bars of sneakers.) Would you take any food with you? If yes, what would you take?

I hope to hear back from you :)

    All the best,

    Jade C.

  2. Hi there Lauren

Great job on your list of 5 things you need on a hiking trip. You also included a hiking image as well which is really good as it will help with the understanding of your post! I really like how each thing you've listed, you've supported your answer with a reason behind each essential which is brilliant and I agree with every single of them; they're all pretty important to bring on a hike, especially water! Got to stay hydrated! Also bringing a friend along on the hike is always good, beats being lonely and if you do get lost you have each other for support. If you were to go on a hiking trip, who would take on the trip with you and why? Let me know in the comments!

Looking forward to hearing from you Lauren and keep up the awesome blog posting!

    Jade F :)
