Did you know that the longest running television show in New Zealand history is a programme called ‘Country Calendar’? It started on 6 March 1966 and has been running ever since. The programme includes stories of everyday New Zealanders, many of whom are farmers. Our second activity is to write down what we think would be interesting about being a farmer. What would be challenging? Would we want to be a farmer when we grow up?
Activity 2-
Something that would be interesting about being a farmer is that you would get free food. It depends if you farm animals or food. If you farm food, you would get freshly grown potatoes, carrots, lettuce etc. It would be really healthy and if it is grown in your backyard, it is already extra healthy (better than store bought food). It even tastes better than store bought food!
Some challenging things about being a farmer is the rain. I know rain is good for plants and all, but too much will flood it. Too much rain + dirt = mud. A farmers crop can overflow and drown the plants. When it stops raining, and the farmer would go to get the food, it would be very muddy. You'll get mud in the house, mud on the carpet. Mud everywhere! Another challenging thing is pests. Things like birds and worm/caterpillars might get hungry and nibble into your food. That won't be good :(
I wouldn't want to be a farmer when I'm older. One reason for that that is because I get hayfever. If I'm working with the plants or the animals, I would get hayfever. That wouldn't be good. Another reason is because I play WAY more than I work. You would need to work hard to be a farmer. I like to play a lot and would easily get distracted and leave my job unfinished.

Hey Lauren,
ReplyDeleteThis is Jade C from the Summer Learning Journey. It's nice to be back to read another activity blog post! You are working so well getting through the activities. Do you enjoy doing them? :)
I have never watched the TV show "Country Calendar" but I know what kind of work farmers do as my grandparents used to own a farm & orchard in Korea. I liked going to my grandparent's house because I got to eat many sweet and juicy fruits like white peach, apple, pear, and watermelon.
Different fruits ripe in different seasons and the sweetness and size greatly depends on the sun, temperature, rain, and soil.
I also wouldn't want to be a farmer because you have to take care of all the plants and trees there. I once bought a flower pot to put it on my desk and it died few weeks later because I didn't take care of it properly.
Also, I can't wake up early in the mornings. It's really hard for me to wake up early as I have a bad habit of sleeping really late. Sometimes that affects me during the day as I get really tired and sleepy to do any work.
I enjoyed reading and commenting on your blog, I hope you like my feedback and I wish to hear back from you!
All the best,
Jade C.
Hi Lauren,
DeleteThank you for your reply, your comment made me laugh :) Yes, I think we do have a lot in common! We both shouldn't get any more plants, we are plant destroyers! I look forward to reading your other interesting blogs!

Kia Ora Lauren,
ReplyDeleteI’m Dani, a member of the Summer Learning Journey team. I normally comment on blogs in the Kaikohekohe cluster ( Northland) but I have been lucky enough to get the chance to visit some blogs in the Uru Manuka cluster!
You have made some great points. I actually grew up on a beef and sheep farm in Northland. We always had a freezer full of meat. We also made a huge garden in one of the paddocks so we always had lots of fresh vegetables and we got fruit from the orchard by the house. We think the orchard was planted by some of the first settlers in Okaihau.
Luckily we didn’t have too early of a start as we didn’t milk dairy cows but we were still up early to get all the jobs done!
You are right about the mud though! Every time we had heavy rain, it always got very muddy especially in winter. But we always had gumboots that we wore so our feet were still warm and dry.
So you have some reasons why you don’t want to be a farmer. Have you thought about what kind of job you would like to have?
Keep up the great work!
-Dani
