Summer Learning Journey:Day 4, Part 1

In late 2016, the movie Moana was released by Disney. It’s a beautiful story about a young Polynesian girl from the fictional island of Motunui, who goes on a big adventure. Our first task for today is to watch the trailer and write down what the movie is about.I've seem it heaps of times. We even have the movie on dvd (blu-ray)!

Activity 1-
Movie Trailer -
In the beginning, there was only water. Until the mother island, Te Fiti, emerged. SHe gave the life to all islands. Over time, some seeked her heart. There was a trickster, a shapeshifter, demigod of the wind and sea. His magical fish hook gave him the ability to shapeshift. His name was Maui. He stole the heart of Te Fiti. At that moment, Te Fiti collapsed. Maui tried to escape, but was confronted by another to seeked the heart. Te Ka. Te Ka was a lava monster. He stuck Maui out of the sky. Since then, the heart of Te Fiti and his fish hook were never to be seen. Without her heart, island after island with die, until there is nothing left.

Moana is a little girl who has always been drawn to the ocean. Her father is the chief of her island. Moana is to be the next chief. But first, she must learn where she is meant to be. As a child, Moana would slip out to see her grandmother (mother of her dad). She is also drawn to the sea. She tells Moana to follow her heart. A few years past, Moana is now a young lady. She has learnt that her village is her home. She is now ready to become chief. Her hometown starts having troubles. The coconuts are all black and crusty in the inside. She tells them to start a new growth in an open piece of land.  The fishers say that they can't catch any fish. Then she gets reminded of the sea. She wants them to fish beyond the reef. The reef was the boundary of their island. No one was to go past it. Her mother found her and told her a story. Her father was just like her. Once night, he snuck out and sail past the reef. He brought his best friend along with him. The waves were as high as mountains. He couldn't save his best friend, and he's hoping he can save you. Once everyone leaves, she decides to go on a boat and sail past the reef. Once she got over, the waves were really high, and crushed her boat. She makes it safely back to the land. Her grandmother finds her and tells her that their ancestors were once voyagers (people who go exploring). Moana asked why they stopped. When Maui stole the heart, monsters were sent into the sea. Her grandmother also tells her that their island is dying. She gives the heart to Moana and tells her to find Maui and make him restore the heart of Te Fiti. Because her grandmother is really old, she soon got sick and died. Moana had to leave and save their island.

Once she got past the reef, she followed the stars to find Maui. A huge storm comes and Moana and her boat got eaten by a huge wave. When she woke up, she found herself at Maui's island. She meet up with Maui and after a LOT of talking, both of them were on their way to find Maui's fish hook. On the way, they had to fight real life moving coconuts. When they made it past them, they were back on their way to find his fish hook. It wasn't that easy. There was a oversized crab (about 100x it's normal size) there to stop them. They manage to get Maui's hook and sneak away. They soon found Te Fiti. But of course, Te Ka was also there. Maui distracted Te Ka and Moana went to Te Fiti's island (what was left of it anyway. But as she approved it, Te Fiti was no longer there. She spots the spiral (the place where the heart of Te Fiti is meant to go) on Te Ka's chest. After reminding Te Ka who she really was, and returning the heart, she turned back to her normal self. During the battle, Maui's fish hook was destroyed. After apologizing to Te Fiti for stealing her heart, Te Fiti gave Maui a new one. Moana got a new boat and peace was restored. Her family and her village now sail all across the ocean.

The End

The main characters were Moana and Maui.
The Sub Main characters were Te Ka, Te Fiti, and Moana's Dad.
Other characters were, Moana's Mum, Grandmother, Hei Hei (the chicken) Pua (the pig), the Crab and the coconuts.

My favorite part was when they were fighting the coconuts because Moana looked like she'd been fighting for years.

  1. Hi there Lauren,

Jade F from the SLJ team! Great job on the blog post! Wow! I’m really impressed with the detail that you’ve included in your summary for Moana! I can totally tell you’ve seen the movie more than once.

I’ve seen Moana heaps of times too! My favourite part of the film was when Moana’s Grandmother’s ghost come back and gives her words of wisdom to carry on with her journey to get the heart to Te Fiti. I thought that was such a beautiful scene and her Grandma is one of my favourite characters and she’s played by Kiwi actress Rachel House, who I had the chance to meet at an audition for a performing arts academy once! :)

I really liked how you’ve included a list of main characters and sub-characters in your activity as well. Very well organised Lauren, great effort. What would be your favourite song from the movie? I think my favourite would be either We Know The Way or How Far I’ll Go.

I look forward to hearing from you soon and keep up the amazing blog posts.

    All the best,
    Jade F :)
