The Sky's the limit!
This is Eliza McCartney’s first ever Olympics. She is competing in women's pole vault. She Lives in New Zealand, Auckland. She is born on 11th December, weighs 66 kg and is 1.79 meters tall. She has grown up in New Zealand. Her Mum’s name is Donna and her Dad’s name is William. Her Dad used to do high jumping and her mum did gymnastics.
Eliza McCartney is a very good pole vault jumper and started doing the jump when she was 14. She became successful in her early teens. Her couch was Jeremy McColl. She and came first in the 2004 Oceania Athletics Championships. Eliza McCartney has two younger brothers and went to Vauxhall school. Later, she studied physiology University of Auckland.
This is her first but hopefully not last Olympics. She competed in Pole Vault. When it was her turn, she held the pole in her hands and shoulder then started running up. She placed the pole down a jumped up into the air. Then she let go and flew right over the bar that was 4.80 meters high. She was an eagle trying to swoop straight down at her prey with the speed she came falling down. She was leading at 1st place until the last jump…. It was 5 cms higher. 2 or 3 others had already made it. All the pressure was on her.
All of New Zealand depended on her, she didn’t know how to cope with it because she is only 19 years. She was at least guaranteed a bronze because all the other jumps, she made it in one go. Eliza McCartney breathed in and out heavily. Suddenly, out of the blue she started sprinting with all her might and swinged off her pole but also knocking the pole over as she tried to go other it. She is rank 5 in the world but still won a bronze for New Zealand. She is the youngest Kiwi to earn a medal at Olympics.
Overall, I’m still glad that she has done her best and won bronze for us. Anyway, she is only 19 years old and set a good example of a New Zealander. At least she tried her best and look at where it took her. I want to be like her when I’m older.
