For art, the median I am going to focus on this year is painting. So far, we have looked at some practical work to help us develop some painting techniques and ideas for our portfolio. The first painting technique we looked at was negative and positive space in an artwork. We first painted a piece of paper black and using white, we painted the subject matter we chose that relates to our kaupapa. For my first painting on positive and negative space, I used a magpie for my subject matter. This links to my theme because in the Tanabata story, magpies help the lovers cross the river once a year so they can find each other. It was also convenient that magpies are black and white which meant it was good for this task since we were painting only in black and white. This is the piece I painted-
The second task was to make a palette of colours that we would use relating to our kaupapa on our portfolio. The colours I chose to include are similar to those of the night sky with different shades of blues and purples as well as black. I also added green for the bamboo branches that are popular during the Tanabata festival in Japan (a celebration based on the folktale). This is a rough idea of the colours I wish to use-
