In Biology, we are looking at osmosis. Osmosis is a special type of diffusion (the process of high concentration to low concentration) but with water instead of gas. It occurs because some molecules are too large to pass through the membrane. This is an example of passive transport because it requires no energy.
Gummy bear in water hypothesis:
The gummy bear is more concentrated in sugar than the water, so the gummy bear is hypertonic to the water. Therefore the water molecules will go into the gummy bear and it will increase in size.
Gummy bear in water and salt hypothesis:
Because gummy bears are made with sugar, I think that the concentration of the gummy bear and water with sugar is isotonic. This means that there will be no change in appearance.
Gummy bear in water and sugar hypothesis:
I think that the gummy bear will shrink in the water with salt since the concentration of salt in the water is greater than the salt in a gummy bear. The gummy bear is hypotonic to the water with salt so the water will leave the gummy bear.
Results:
The gummy bears in the normal water and the water with sugar increased in size, while the gummy bear in water and salt decreased. I think the reason that the gummy bear in water with sugar got bigger even though I predicted it would be the same is that the concentration of sugar in the water and the sugar in the gummy bear weren't the same. The concentration of sugar in the gummy bear was greater (hypertonic) than the water with sugar, which is why the water entered the gummy bear.
