What is Oil Painting?

What is oil paint made of?

Oil paint is made of dry pigment powder and refined linseed oil.

What are three benefits to painting with oil paints?

1. Oil paints take a while to dry so it's good for blending

2. It gives a more glossy finish to your work

3. Has good depth of colour

What are three disadvantages to painting with oil paints?

1. They can take up to six months to dry

2. Strong smell

3. Difficult to clean up

Why do you need to prime your surface before painting with oil paints?

Priming the surface will protect it since the chemicals in oil paint will start to ruin the canvas and also so the surface will be less absorbent.

How do you clean up your brushes and equipment after using oil paints?

Water alone will not be enough to clean oil paint, so instead, you should dip it in an oil-based medium such as linseed oil which will also condition your brush and loosen any hard or dried paint.

What is impasto technique?

Impasto is where you put a thick layer of paint on your canvas and with this technique, you can see the brush or knife strokes so it looks like the paint is coming out of the canvas.

What is “Imprimatura” or “grisaille” in painting?

Imprimatura is a stain of colour printed onto white ground often in earth tones. The word is Italian for "first layer paint". Grisaille uses monochrome or grey tones.

What interesting facts did you find out about oil painting?

That is can take up to six months for it to fully dry.

From what we learnt, we did an oil painting practice. This should relate to imprimatur since this acts as like a base for our work:

The technique that we used for this next oil practice painting is impasto because we applied a thick layer of oil paint on our work and scratched it so there is texture in our work.
