What is blocking in art? Blocking is a technique where an artist will apply the underpainting of a painting down to just briefly map out the shape or colour of the composition of the artwork. It's similar to sketching in art since blocking acts as a rough, but not definite, guide that will help you get an idea of the direction of your artwork.
Blocking in oil paintings:
In this oil painting, blocking is used to act as a guide for the composition of different aspects. It provides an idea of where everything will be laid out. With blocking, not my detail is added, and only the rough colours or shapes are loosely painted on because it is still just a draft that can be edited later on as the artist pleases.
With this oil painting, the blocking technique is used to roughly get an idea of where the shades and highlights fall within the portrait. Once again, it's not super detailed because blocking is only used to map things out in a painting to see if your idea works. Detail will be added later and built up as the artist works on the piece.
