Film Production - Wednesday

In English today, we are continuing our study on different film aspects. The film technique that we focused on today was the over-the-shoulder shot, which is a type of camera shot. We watched a video on an over-the-shoulder shot (breaking down a scene from the series Westworld) and we are to answer the questions listed below based on what we learnt.

What if the effect of an over-the-shoulder shot?

It shows that the two characters in the scene have a connection

What film aspect shows a disconnection between characters?

A single shot breaks the connection that can be portrayed through an OTS shot.

How does the director of this scene show the disconnection of the characters?

Although there is initially still an OTS shot, the camera is on a dolly and zooms in slowly to each character until they are now by themselves in the shot, also known as a single mid-shot.

What eventually totally isolates the female character?

When the camera is on the man, the waiter is still in the background, showing that both the man and the waiter have a connection still, while the female has a single shot to show that she doesn't have a connection with the waiter and shows how isolated from everyone she really is.
