Film Production - Monday

Today in English, we continued to look at other areas in film production. The ones we looked at today were cinematography and design. This is what I learned about those departments:

Cinematography:

The cinematographer, sometimes also referred to as the director of photography, is responsible for putting the director's vision into motion. They have to prepare and assemble the cameras and any film tools they may need to use, make plans with the director and help them decide what the overall look of the film they want to achieve is. They also work closely with the lighting department during the shooting. Not only do they help decide which lights to use, but also where to put the light in the shot.

Designing the World:

Mise-en-scene referees to various aspects that come together in a single shot. This covers things such as the set design, the props, the makeup and costumes, the body language and so forth. Therefore, mise-en-scene includes many different departments of film coming together, such as the art department that is in charge of the physical world like the set and the production designers that work pre-production of the film. Once the location or time period is decided, they have to do a lot of o research about the era or place so that they can get the feel 'just right' in the film. After this has been decided, it's important that the characters and props also fit the vibe otherwise it's all for nothing. This is where the costume and hair and makeup department is important for contributing to mise-en-scene. In fact, all departments need to come together to successfully create mise-en-scene.
