Music and the Civil Rights

  •  How did music affect the Civil Rights movement? Why was music such a powerful force?

- Music was one of the ways that people in the US had protested against discrimination and talked about the Civil Rights movement. Themes such as sexual revolution, feminism, black people's rights, and environmentalism had risen up. The 'March on Washington' was a huge protest in the 1960s that had included people marching for civil rights as well as Nelson Mandela's 'I Have A Dream' speech. This had made a big impact on the Civil Rights movement.

  • Find some examples of music from the '60s

  1. Kia Ora Lauren. Two great musical examples here. Music sure is an amazing way to express emotion and those big issues. Is there a song from the movement that really stands out for you!
