Careers Inquiry Pt. 2

In Social Studies we have been learning about different careers. We were then to research a career that is of interest to us. I chose to research being an English teacher. I found this interesting because both my uncle and my dad had once taught in the English field, mostly as an ESL or an ESOL teacher. I enjoy English at school and often help my friends with editing and proofreading their work. Even my aunt on my mum's side taught English in Japan. Since I like both Japanese and English at school, I think that teaching English in Japan is a job that I would like, although I may not be brave enough to go overseas into a whole new culture for a job.

  1. Provide a paragraph written overview/summary of your job.

Teach English or teach it as a second language to students. May even work overseas to teach

English :D

  1. What are the working conditions like?

Help my students improve their English skills and help with their fluency and confidence to converse in English

  1. What skills and knowledge are required for this career?

Preferably knowing how to speak English :D Knowledge about other cultures and even skills in a second language can also help

  1. What are the personal qualities that you require to do this job?

Good communication, open, hard-working, encouraging and professional

  1. What are the key tasks that you will do in this job?

Make and organise my own work, spend time outside of class working

  1. How much will you earn? Salary? And what are the work hours like?

$46K-$75K and work for a 25-hour working week (plus additional working hours at home)

  1. What training and education are required for this career? How long does the training take and cost?

Good knowledge of the English language, teaching principles, planning skills, and classroom management. 1-5 years and I don’t know cost

  1. What prerequisites are there to get into the training course?

ESOL qualifications, and good English knowledge

  1. What subjects will you need to study in school to prepare you for this career?

English, Japanese (if overseas)

  1. Add any interesting information about your chosen career that you may find

You don’t necessarily need to know another language to teach English overseas (it could depend on the job though), as long as you can speak English well :)
