How To Be Safe In Science

LO: How to be safe when getting set on fire and in the classroom.
Aim: I want to find out how to be safe in Science.

Equipment:

  • Bucket
  • Water
  • Tube
  • Gas
  • Liquid Soap/detergent
  • Safety Glasses
  • Lighter

Planning
Method:

  1. Get a big bucket.
  2. Put a good squit of liquid soap in the bucket.
  3. Fill it half way with water.
  4. Take off loose clothing/pull your selves up (if you have any), and tie long hair back in a ponytail.
  5. Connect a tube up to the gas tap and put the other end in the water.
  6. Turn on the gas (tap) and make some bubbles!
  7. Wet your hands and wrists up to your elbows with water.
  8. Use safety glasses/goggles whenever you are working with fire.
  9. Get a scoop of bubbles.
  10. Hold the bubbles away from your face.
  11. Using a lighter, ignite the bottom of the bubbles (underneath your hand).
  12. DO NOT PANIC!!!
  13. If you want to stop the flame, SLOWLY move your hands apart.
  14. You're done!

Doing

My hair was in a ponytail. I spent a long time at the tap. We had to wet our hands with water. Water is like a protective shield that fire can't get through. Before we got called up I took off my cardigan so that It wouldn't set on fire. The fabric was wool so it is easily flammable. Then I stepped to the bucket where the bubbles are. I took a reasonable amount of bubbles. The bubbles were filled with gas. Then I put my hands up so my face and body would be protected. Then Mr Stock put the lighter under my hand and lite it. The flames were really hot. It rose up because of the oxygen. I pulled my hands apart and the flame went out.

Explaining
Why were we scared?

Because we had adrenaline and we were just waiting for it to happen. We knew it was coming but we didn't know when. We didn't know what to feel or what to expect. Then all of a sudden it happened. The most important thing was to keep calm. It happened all at once. That was why we were scared.

  1. Hi Lauren, that was a cool and fun activity in your Science class .The way you presented the methods to do it was clear and the video of yourself doing it was fantastic , well done !Did it hurt after setting the fire on your hands? Were you scared to do it?
