In 1996, New Zealand adopted the MMP voting system. In September of 2017 we had a national election. Everyone in New Zealand, over the age of 18, was invited to vote for who they wanted to form the next government in New Zealand. The race was really close and in the end, three different political parties (Labour, New Zealand First and the Green Party), came together to form the new government. It is called a ‘coalition government’ because it includes different people from different political parties. Imagine that you had to form a coalition government with two other people. Who would you choose to partner with? Our first task is to pick 2 people we would like to pair up with.
Activity 1-
1. My mum. My mum was once a maths teacher (in the Philippines). It would be helpful to have a person that is really good at maths to help with numbers. Like numbers to do with money, percentages of stuff and other things. She would also be there if I got stressed out and tell me everything's alright.
2. My dad. My dad was an english teacher (before the 2011 christchurch earthquake). His work building got destroyed, but him, and his students, made it out safely. He is good at talking with people and explaining stuff. If I had to write a letter or something, he would be able to double check and correct any english mistakes. He would also help if someone were talking to me, asking a question that I didn't know how to explain.

Hi there Lauren,
ReplyDeleteI thought your choice in members for your coalition was fantastic. That is so handy that your one of your parents is a maths teacher and an English teacher, they would definitely help you with things like dealing with financial challenges and guidance with anything you find difficult.
I would probably choose my Mum to be on my coalition as well, she's a deputy principal and knows a great deal of politics especially with education and would know what to do with providing more for schools and teachers.
Awesome work on your post Lauren, looking forward to reading more!
Cheers,
Jade F :)
