My kaupapa for level 2 art this year is Spiritual/cultural. Within this theme, I decided to explore Japanese culture. A folktale I came across was Tanabata, which is also known as the Hoshi Matsuri/Star festival in Japan commonly celebrated on July 7th. I decided to tell the story of this folktale for my portfolio.
The two main characters of the story are Orihime and Kikoboshi. These two characters represent the stars Vega and Altair. Some other subject matters that I will be exploring that relates to the story are stars (the milky way) and magpies. I plan to include traditional images such as kimonos and the colourful hanging paper on bamboo branches which relate directly to the festival celebrated from the folktale.
