My Migration
In Social Studies we're starting the migration topic. Our task was to make a My Map and label our migration story. I also added my family's migration story because they did quite a lot of migrating as well. I will explain more about it further down.
What is migration?
Migration happens when people move from one place to live in another place.
People who migrate are called:
Emigrants when they leave their country or Immigrants when they enter a particular country
Here is my My Map:
My Gran was born in the Shetland Islands in Scotland. They visited New Zealand before and decided that it was a good place to live. She and her family migrated down to Auckland because that was were my Gran's cousin lived. Later on they moved down to Christchurch. My Granddad then moved back to Scotland for work and then got married. So my dad and uncle were born near Glasgow. When my dad was 3 and my uncle was 2, they decided New Zealand would be a much better place to raise their kids so made the 6 week boat journey to migrate to NZ. Both my dad and uncle were English teachers. My Aunt is from Hong Kong and moved to New Zealand to study English, my uncle was her teacher. My mum was born and raised in the Philippines until my dad got married to her and she migrated down to live in New Zealand. My uncle then moved to Hong Kong and married my aunt and lived there for 19 years. At the end of last year my uncle and aunt (along with their 12 year old cat) moved to Christchurch to live. Both my brother and I were born and raised in Christchurch and only moved house once (within the same area). So I'm half Scottish and half Filipino, but I associate myself with being Filipino more. That's my family's migration story, a lot of moving back and forward in my opinion.
I wonder, if for whatever reason and you need to migrate ,where would you like to go?
Lauren,
ReplyDeleteThis is a very in depth family migration history. You have taken it further by looking at your parents and their parents (your grandparents). I think your story is really interesting as your mix of Filipino and Scottish is rare. You are lucky to have so much culture in your family history. Well done keep up the hard work. You can now move on to the next weeks slide show and activities which is on British migration to NZ.
Hi Lauren,
ReplyDeleteI discovered some interesting information in your migration story.
