Observing The Effects of Acid Rain

What is Acid Rain: Acid rain if a form of rain that occurs when stuff like man-made/bad chemicals or pollution mix with the rain in the clouds.

Aim: To observe the effect of acid rain.

Equipment:

  • Petri dish
  • Small slice of apple - moist
  • Flower petal - moist
  • Scoop of Calcium Carbonate - moist
  • 3 drops of Universal Indicator
  • 3 drops of Bromothymol Blue
  • Stiring rod/something to stir with
  • Weigh Boat
  • Scoop of Sodium Sulfite
  • 5 drops of Acid
Method:
  1. Dampen the chunk of apple, flower petal and the calcium carbonate and place around the perimetre of the petri dish, not touching each other.
  2. Add 3 drops of universal indicator and 3 drops of bromothymol blue also along the outside. Nothing should be touching.
  3. In the weigh boat add a scoop of sodium sulfite and a couple drops of water.
  4. Stir to slightly dissolve together.
  5. Add 5 drops of acid to the mix.
  6. Quickly place the weigh boat into the centre of the petri dish and cover it with the lid quickly.
  7. Observe the results and changed.
Results:
The bromothymol blue should have started greenish then turn to a pink or red colour.
The universal indicator should have started from blue to green then yellow.
The calcium carbonate should have been rather moist then turn crustier.
The petal should have started to loose it's colour and turn paler.
The apple should have started moist then become drier.

Explanation: The acid rain really does eat away at things and the living things - the flower and apple - become less lively. The liquids changed colour, showing that it had come in contact with something else and the building started to become frail. Acid rain really does live up its name but I quickly searched up and it says that acid rain does not effect humans and their skin so we are all okay. Even though things around us might not be.
