Te Tiriti O Waitangi

The Treaty of Waitangi (Te Tiriti O Waitangi in Maori) is a treaty signed on 6th February 1840 by the British Crown and some of the Maori Chiefs of Aotearoa. The British Crown offered resources such as muskets and protection while the British got hold of their land. Some chiefs were against it, while others agreed to sign it. Hone Heke was the first Maori Chief to sign the treaty - however, he turned against it because he realised how they were losing all their land. The treaty was only drafted a few days before the signing in English, and the Maori version was only given 24 hours to be translated. Because there were some mistranslations and misunderstands such as Kawanatanga which translates directly to souvernty or absoulte authority.
