Periodic Table

What are the different types of elements?
- On the first left hand row going down (the very top one, 1, excluded) are alkali metals, the next row over we have the alkaline earth metals, and for the next stretch of rows we have the transition metals and going towards the right hand side of the table we have the post-transition metals. From the last 50s to early 70s (atomic number) we have the Lanthanoid metals and late 80s to early 100s (atomic number) are actinoid matals. On the right hand side of the table we have the non-metals. In between the metals and non-metals we have metalloids. On the right hand side we have reactive nonmetals and finally the noble gases

What are transition metals?
- Transition metals are found in the centre of the table and have valence in two of their outer shells instead of just one. They include metals such as iron and nickel.

What are alkali metals?
- They are metals the create alkalis when reacting with metals are are on the far left hand side.

What are noble gases?
- They are elements that don't often react and don't cause a chemical reactions because they are already stable. They are on the far right of the period table.

The period table was created in 1869 by a Russian chemist called Dimitri Mendeleev. Throughout time additional elements have been added to the table.
