Mean, Median, Mode and Range

For maths, we are studying what a mean, median, mode and range is. They are all types of averages. The mean would be the type of average you would be used to. The mean is where you add up all the numbers, then divide the number depending on how many different numbers you added together. Example- 10+5+6 = 21 / 3 = 7 (/ meaning divided by). No, you don't use the BODMAS (brackets, orders, division, multiplication, addition and subtraction) rule for it.
A median is the middle number. If there are 11 numbers (or an odd number) you use the number in the middle. You have to line the numbers up in smallest to largest number form. Example- 5, 7, 9, 11, 14. The median is 9 because that is the number in the middle.
If it is an even number of numbers and there is 2 middle numbers you find out what is halfway between those two numbers. Example- 4, 5, 9, 11, 14, 18, 22, 25. The median is 11 and 14. So halfway between 11 and 14 is 12.5.
A mode is the most used number in the set of numbers. There isn't always a mode in a number set. But there is always a mean, median and a range. The numbers don't have to be in order (smallest to largest) to find a mode. Here is an example of a mode- 54, 76, 23, 87, 98, 23, 11, 14. The mode of the number is 23 because it appears the most in the set of numbers. There can be more than 1 modes in a number but if a number appears twice and another number appres 3 times, the number that appears 3 times is the mode, not the one that appeared twice.
A range is the number between the smallest number and the largest number. It's a bit hard to explain, but it basically means that you take away the smallest number from the largest number. Example- 3, 8, 11, 15, 19. The range is 16 because the distance from 3 to 19 is 16 and 19-3 is 16. :)
